Lead with wisdom in a multiracial society like Malaysia
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim means “In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful”. As Muslims, we are always called to remember Him in any situation on a daily basis. It is hoped that by remembering Allah SWT, we also observe His loving and compassionate attributes.
These are the qualities that are very important especially when we live among human beings in a multi-racial and multi-religious country. Malaysia is a civilised, religious and plural country of all characteristics and different from other countries.
In fact, this country is protected by Allah SWT, years safe from extreme natural disasters, free from extreme poverty, free from widespread social ills as in some other countries. In short, the land of Malaysia is protected by Allah SWT.
Therefore, with all the blessings given by Allah SWT, we choose leaders by placing the hope that they have the qualities as mentioned above, namely compassion and love to lead the country.
Touching on leadership, from before Merdeka we were endowed with wise leaders from various religions and races and this is the strength of Malaysia that is recognized by friends and opponents.
We do not need guidance other than taking the example of the leadership of Rasulullah SWT and his companions. The Muslim community as the majority in this country needs to learn and maintain a spirit of unity with each other to ensure that the unity, peace and tranquility enjoyed from the pre-independence era is not compromised.
Due to the presence of evil elements such as provoking politicians, we are all emotional and destroying the existing harmony. Looking at the current scenario in Kedah, the decisions made by YAB Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Menteri Besar of Kedah are becoming more and more weird.
The farther away he is from wise leadership we are accustomed to in this beloved earth. As a Muslim, what was said and done by the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah is very sad.
This is because he represents a political party that should fight for the examples provided by the Prophet SAW and his companions. Recently, the issue of the cancellation of the Thaipusam festival holiday in Kedah announced by the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah has come to the attention of many.
In Malaysia, Hindus have only two main festivals where they are given public holidays, namely Deepavali and Thaipusam. Here, I do not see where the loss of the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah is if he issues leave to those who celebrate Thaipusam which has previously been recognized by the State of Kedah and several other states in Malaysia.
Has the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah resolved all the problems in Kedah so that he feels he has plenty of time to continue to hurt the sentiments of Malaysians of various races?
Kedah has various social problems among the highest in Malaysia, the increase in illegitimate children, the highest number of students skipping school, drug abuse and various other issues and this all happened before Covid-19 hit the country.
Now with the economic downturn, the increasing number of positive Covid-19 cases in Kedah and the increasing number of Kedah citizens who have lost their jobs, does the YAB Menteri Besar need to find and create new problems? Not enough with existing problems?
YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah should understand the needs and characteristics of a leader in a plural country with racial diversity. He should avoid hurting Malaysians of various races and religions.
In fact, it should also be noted that our strength lies in the diversity that exists in this country. Let us not emulate what is happening in some Middle Eastern countries where the people are almost all Muslims but they do not stop fighting with each other.
I call on the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah, for example the lesson from the sirah of the Prophet SAW where he has united the Muhajirin and Ansar in the Hijrah event and made the Medina Charter as the backbone of administration in a multi-racial society.
We as Muslims in Malaysia also call on the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah to delve into the advice of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah who said that all leaders should take the approach of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in governing a multi-racial country to foster the unity of the people.
He said that mutual respect and love and justice based on Islamic law are two aspects that support the administration of the Prophet. He also suggested that all leaders should always take the approach of protecting the rights of believers of various religions and races, while continuing to help the weak.
YAB Menteri Besar, I ask YAB to be given guidance from Allah SWT to open YAB’s heart and eyes to understand YAB’s responsibilities as a Muslim leader because whatever YAB does will affect Muslims in this country.
I will always pray for YAB. “O Allah, improve the leaders of the Muslims, give them your taufik to be fair to their people, and can do good to them, be gentle with them, want to hear their complaints, and pay attention to their benefits, make them to love their people and make the people love them.
Give them your taufik to remain in Your straight path, and always practice the straight teachings of Your religion ”Amen. I end with a little advice to the YAB Menteri Besar of Kedah.
There is no need for YAB to fight with other party leaders to be respected by their own party members, there is no need for YAB to fight with the Kedah minority to be loved or respected by the majority in Kedah and there is no need to tarnish other races to become champions of their own race.
Prioritize doing good to all, prioritize the welfare of all and always take care of your own words to be respected by friends and opponents. PAS is currently under the spotlight with various questions.
Can PAS lead a plural country in this millennium? Can PAS work hand in hand with the leadership of different races and religions to develop the country? YAB Kedah’s wrong move will bring consequences to PAS.
I also take this opportunity to praise the approach taken by YB Saravanan who has reprimanded the state leadership in a good way, this is an example of a leader who is used to working with the leadership of various races and religions.
I hope YAB Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Menteri Besar of Kedah quickly learns how to lead a multi-racial and multi-religious state so as not to harm PAS’s opportunity to continue to lead in Kedah and the Federal level.

ERTI MEMIMPIN DENGAN KEBIJAKSANAAN DALAM MASYARAKAT MAJMUK SEPERTI MALAYSIA
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim ertinya “Dengan nama Allah Yang Maha Pengasih, Maha Penyayang”.
Sebagai umat Islam, kita diseru sentiasa untuk mengingatiNya dalam apa jua keadaan pada setiap hari. Adalah diharapkan dengan mengingati Allah SWT, kita juga mengintai sifat-sifatNya yang pengasih dan penyayang. Inilah sifat-sifat yang amat penting terutamanya bila kita hidup sesama manusia dalam sebuah negara yang berbilang bangsa dan menganuti pelbagai agama.
Malaysia adalah sebuah negara bertamadun, beragama dan majmuk dari segala ciri dan berbeza dengan negara lain. Malah, negara ini dilindungi oleh Allah SWT, bertahun selamat daripada bencana alam yang keterlaluan, bebas dari kemiskinan melampau, bebas dari gejala sosial yang berleluasa seperti di sesetengah negara lain. Pendek kata, bumi Malaysia ini dilindungi oleh Allah SWT. Justeru, dengan semua nikmat yang diberikan Allah SWT ini, kita memilih pemimpin dengan meletakkan harapan bahawa mereka mempunyai sifat-sifat seperti yang disebut di atas iaitu belas kasihan dan kasih sayang untuk menerajui negara.
Menyentuh mengenai kepimpinan, dari sebelum Merdeka lagi kita dikurniakan dengan pemimpin yang bijaksana dari kalangan pelbagai agama dan kaum dan inilah kekuatan Malaysia yang diiktiraf kawan dan lawan. Kita tidak perlu pedoman selain daripada mengambil contoh kepimpinan Rasulullah SWT dan para sahabat beliau. Masyarakat Islam sebagai majoriti di negara ini perlu mengambil iktibar dan mempertahankan semangat bersatu padu antara satu sama lain bagi memastikan perpaduan, keamanan dan ketenteraman yang dinikmati dari zaman sebelum merdeka tidak tergugat.
Jangan hanya kerana ada anasir jahat seperti politikus yang menghasut, kita semua turut beremosi dan memusnahkan keharmonian yang ada. Melihat kepada senario semasa di Kedah, makin hari makin ganjil keputusan-keputusan yang dibuat oleh YAB Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Menteri Besar Kedah. Makin jauh beliau dari contoh-contoh kepimpinan bijaksana yang kita sudah biasa di bumi yang dicintai ini. Sebagai seorang Muslimin, apa yang dilafazkan dan dibuat oleh YAB Menteri Besar Kedah amat menyedihkan. Ini kerana beliau mewakili parti politik yang sepatutnya memperjuangkan contoh-contoh yang disediakan oleh Baginda SAW dan para sahabatnya.
Terkini, isu pembatalan cuti perayaan Thaipusam di Kedah yang diumumkan oleh YAB Menteri Besar Kedah menjadi perhatian ramai. Di Malaysia, kaum India yang beragama Hindu hanya mempunyai dua perayaan di mana mereka diberi cuti umum iaitu Hari Deepavali dan Hari Thaipusam. Di sini, saya tidak nampak di mana ruginya YAB Menteri Besar Kedah sekiranya membenarkan mereka yang menyambut Thaipusam diberi cuti yang sebelum ini telah pun diiktiraf oleh Negeri Kedah dan beberapa negeri lain di Malaysia.
Adakah YAB Menteri Besar Kedah telah menyelesaikan segala masalah di Kedah sehingga merasakan beliau ada banyak masa untuk terus mengguris hati warga Malaysia yang pelbagai kaum? Kedah mempunyai pelbagai masalah sosial antara yang paling tinggi di Malaysia, peningkatan anak tak sah taraf, jumlah pelajar ponteng sekolah paling tinggi, salah guna dadah serta pelbagai lagi isu dan ini semua berlaku sebelum Covid-19 melanda negara. Kini dengan kemuruduman ekonomi, peningkatan kes positif Covid-19 di Kedah dan jumlah warga Kedah yang kehilangan kerja makin meningkat, adakah YAB Menteri Besar perlu mencari dan mewujudkan masalah yang baru? Tidak cukupkan dengan masalah sedia ada?
YAB Menteri Besar Kedah seharusnya memahami keperluan dan ciri-ciri seorang pemimpin dalam sebuah negara majmuk dengan kepelbagaian kaum. Beliau seharusnya mengelak dari mengguris hati rakyat Malaysia yang terdiri daripada pelbagai bangsa dan agama. Malah, perlu diingatkan juga bahawa kekuatan kita adalah kepelbagaian yang ada di negara ini. Janganlah kita mencontohi apa yang sedang berlaku di beberapa negara Timur Tengah di mana umatnya hampir keseluruhan Islam tetapi mereka tidak henti-henti bergaduh sesama sendiri.
Saya menyeru kepada YAB Menteri Besar Kedah, contohilah pengajaran daripada sirah Baginda SAW yang mana beliau telah mempersaudarakan kaum Muhajirin dan Ansar dalam peristiwa Hijrah dan menjadikan Piagam Madinah sebagai tunjang pentadbiran dalam masyarakat berbilang kaum.
Kami sebagai Muslimin di Malaysia turut menyeru agar YAB Menteri Besar Kedah menyelami nasihat Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah yang bertitah bahawa sepatutnya semua pemimpin mengambil pendekatan Nabi Muhammad SAW dalam mentadbir negara berbilang bangsa untuk memupuk perpaduan rakyat. Baginda bertitah bahawa saling menghormati dan menyayangi serta keadilan berteraskan syariat islam adalah dua aspek yang menunjangi pentadbiran Baginda Rasulullah. Baginda turut menyarankan supaya semua pemimpin akan sentiasa mengambil pendekatan menjaga hak penganut berbilang agama dan bangsa, di samping berterusan membantu golongan yang lemah.
YAB Menteri Besar, saya mohon YAB diberi hidayah daripada Allah SWT, dibuka hati dan mata YAB supaya memahami tanggungjawab YAB sebagi pemimpin Islam kerana apa sahaja yang dilakukan oleh YAB akan memberi kesan kepada warga Islam di Negara ini. Saya akan sentiasa mendoakan YAB. “Ya Allah, perbaikilah para pemimpin kaum muslimin, berilah mereka taufik-Mu hingga mereka bersikap adil terhadap rakyat mereka, dan dapat berbuat baik kepada mereka, bersikap lembut kepada mereka, mahu mendengar keluhan mereka, dan memerhatikan maslahat mereka, buatlah mereka agar mencintai rakyatnya dan buatlah rakyat agar mencintai mereka. Berilah mereka taufik-Mu agar tetap berada di jalan-Mu yang lurus, dan senantiasa mengamalkan ajaran agama-Mu yang lurus” Amin.
Saya akhiri dengan sedikit nasihat kepada YAB Menteri Besar Kedah. Tidak perlu YAB mencari gaduh dengan pemimpin parti lain untuk disegani ahli parti sendiri, tidak payah YAB bergaduh dengan warga minoriti Kedah untuk disayangi atau dihormati oleh warga majoriti di Kedah dan tidak perlu memburukkan kaum lain untuk menjadi juara kaum sendiri. Utamakan membuat baik untuk semua, utamakan kebajikan semua dan sentiasa menjaga tutur kata diri sendiri agar disegani kawan dan lawan.
PAS kini sedang berada dibawah lampu ‘spotlight’ dengan pelbagai persoalan. Bolehkah PAS memimpin negara majmuk di alaf ini? Bolehkah PAS berganding bahu dengan kepimpinan berlainan kaum dan agama untuk memajukan negara? Salah langkah YAB Kedah akan membawa padah kepada PAS.
Saya juga mengambil kesempatan ini untuk memuji pendekatan yang diambil oleh YB Saravanan yang telah menegur kepimpinan negeri dengan cara baik, ini contoh seorang pemimpin yang sudah biasa bekerjasama dengan kepimpinan pelbagai kaum dan agama. Saya berharap YAB Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Menteri Besar Kedah cepat belajar cara memimpin sebuah negeri pelbagai kaum dan agama supaya tidak memudaratkan peluang PAS untuk terus memimpin di Kedah dan peringkat Persekutuan.
