The rising threat of heart disease in Malaysia

PUCHONG: Health Ministry today said no other disease kills more Malaysians than cardiovascular disease. Mortality due to cardiovascular diseases almost doubled in Malaysia between 2017 and 2019.

In a Facebook post, the ministry said based on Death Statistics 2019 report that showed heart disease not only remains as the main cause of death but the number of cases is also increasing.

“Heart diseases are the number one killer in the country five years ago.

“Death caused by heart diseases had increased around 35.3% in two years since 2017,” it said.

The ministry said 50,000 new cases had been recorded every year and the number is increasing.

“The perception that stroke will only occur to the elderly has to be changed as people in their youth also at risk.

“Smoking is identified as among the main cause of stroke,” it said.

The ministry advised that people who are at risked and have heart disease symptoms to seek immediate treatment.
