New Johor Menteri Besar to be sworn in tomorrow morning

JOHOR BARU: In the ongoing saga over the Johor Menteri Besar post, Johor state secretary Datuk Azmi Rohani confirmed that Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar has given consent for the swearing in ceremony of a new Menteri Besar to be held tomorrow morning at Istana Bukit Serene.

“The sultan has consented to appoint a new Menteri Besar. The accredition letter handover ceremony and menteri besar appointment announcement would be held on Sunday, April 14, 9.30 am at Istana Bukit Serene,”said Azmi in a statement released today.

He also confirmed that the ruler consented the resignation of Datuk Osman Sapian from the MB post in a meeting that was held this morning.

Azmi however stopped short of naming the new MB for the state.

Earlier today Osman claimed that the ruler kept his resignation letter as a souvenir.

Controversy over the MB position arose earlier this week when Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced Osman’s resignation that the former called for as he was not happy with Osman toeing the line for the Johor royalty beyond their roles.

Following that there was a tiff involving Dr Mahathir and Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim over who had the authority to appoint the Menteri Besar.

Bersatu have sent several names to be considered as prospective replacements to Osman.

Speculations are rife that Bukit Kepong assemblyman Dr Sahruddin Jamal, who is also currently a state exco Bersatu is expected to be appointed as the 17th Johor Menteri Besar.
