Health Ministry: No new polio infection so far
PUCHONG: Health Ministry said no new case of polio infection was detected after a three months old baby boy in Tuaran, Sabah was confirmed infected with the disease recently.
Its director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said no new cases were detected after the first polio case was reported.
“Prevention and control steps including detecting Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) around the area where the first polio case were detected have been taken until two days ago. Around 1,553 people were tested but it showed no sign of AFP.
“We also took stool sample from 20 people that have been in contact with the baby and we are still waiting for the lab results,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Hisham said the ministty have also started giving polio vaccine to children who have yet to receive it around the area.
“Until Dec 14, 59 children aged two to 15 years old that have yet to receive the vaccine have been vaccinated.
“All health facility have been ordered to monitor AFP and polio cases,” he said.
Commenting on the baby boy, Hisham said the baby is currently treated in isolation at the hospital and he still needed help with his breathing.
