Anwar called upon to immediately replace Dr Mahathir as PM
GEORGE TOWN: A Pakatan Harapan (PH) lawmaker has called for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to immediately replace Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister.
Batu Uban assemblyman Kumaresan Aramugam said that the move would allow PH to regain the people’s trust, which he claimed is eroding, following the party’s dismal performance in the last two by-elections.
“Anwar should be made Prime Minister as agreed upon to chart the coalition’s future.
“With his experience as former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, I believe he can get the job done,” he said in a statement issued today.
Kumaresan, who is Bayan Baru PKR Youth chief, said there is also an urgent need for a Cabinet reshuffle, as there were several ministers not suited for the job.
“Inefficient senior officials in every ministry must also be replaced,” he added.
He opined that PH’s loss in the two by-elections was not because the people had shifted to BN, but rather intended as a message to PH that it had failed to fulfil its promises.
“Efforts should be made to address our general election promises periodically, such as ones related to the repayment of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation’s student loans and (lowering) petrol prices,” he said, adding that the people’s discontent is obvious from their postings on social media.
He said that PH has to stand up and correct the ongoing situation so that it continues to win the people’s support and remain as the ruling government after the 15th general election.
“If PH does not act fast, there is a possibility that it will lose, and with that, all the efforts taken to bring down the corrupt former ruling government and shape a new Malaysia will be wasted and unfulfilled,” he said.
Kumaresan also called on the government to implement new policies to replace existing ones created by the former government.
“Policies to tackle the rising cost of living have to be prioritised, as it is becoming a burden not only to the B40 group, but other groups as well,” he added.
