Sabotage in contaminated water, confirms minister

PUCHONG: Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr A Xavier Jeyakumar confirmed that the police have found elements of sabotage behind the diesel spillage which contaminated raw water in Sungai Selangor.

“I was informed that elements of sabotage have been identified by the police through their investigations,” he tweeted this afternoon.

The minister also said he had discussed the matter with Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador in a statement earlier.

He also called for the mastermind behind the sabotage to be apprehended and punished by the law.

The contamination had resulted in the shutdown of the Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant Phases 1, 2 and 3, as well as the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant between 6pm to 8.15pm yesterday evening.

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has already lodged a police report earlier today.

The plants were back in operation at 3.30am this morning.

State sand mining concessionaire company, Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB) also did not rule out the possibility of sabotage.

We are currently investigating the cause of the incident from all angles, including the possibility of sabotage, and will provide additional information in due time,” it said.

Semesta said it detected the diesel spills in the Sungai Selangor area near the Hang Tuah Lake on July 21 at around 6.15pm.
