Negaraku in Mandarin: It was done to educate pupils, not insult, says ministry
PUCHONG: The viral video showing pupils from a vernacular school singing the national anthem in Mandarin was not done in an official function.
In a statement, Education Ministry director general Datuk Amin Senin said that his team had investigated the matter and found that the pupils sung the song in a classroom setting.
“And the Negaraku was sung in Mandarin to educate pupils on its meaning and how to show respect to the national anthem,” he said.
Recently, a video, which runs for one minute and 23 seconds, featured pupils from a Chinese school singing Negaraku in Mandarin.
The video drew a lot of flak from social media users, with Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed vowing to probe the matter.
