Malaysia wins the Miss Universe 2019 Best National Costume
PUCHONG: Local designer Carven Ong’s themed ‘A Feeling of Indulgence’ by the Baba and Nyonya costume defeated 89 other participants at the world’s number one beauty pageant.
Carven said he really didn’t expect it and was grateful to have his design recognized in this 67th edition.
“Thank goodness, Malaysia can! I’m very happy for Shweta for doing her best. My team is actually very worried about the national costume. But in the end, we won! “I would like to thank the Miss Universe Malaysia Organization especially National Director, Datin Elaine Daly.
During the announcement, something went wrong when his host, Steve Harvey, announced the Philippines as the winner. Shweta who was on stage with him later corrected Steve.
Fortunately, Shweta was unlucky not to reach the Top 20 and saw the Malaysian representative continue to gather to qualify for the semi-finals in 49 years.
The last time a Malaysian qualified for the semi-finals was through Josephine Lena Wong in 1970. In this year’s edition, South African contestant Zozibini Tunzi was announced as Miss Universe while second place belonged to Puerto Rico and third, Mexico.
