King, Queen visited Penang Hill
GEORGE TOWN: Yang diPertuan Agong AlSultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah yesterday visited The Habitat, one of the tourist attractions on Penang Hill.
Their Majesties took a funicular ride from the lower station to the top at 4.30 pm.
Accompanying them on the ride were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his wife Tan Lean Kee as well as Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng.
Their Majesties were later given a briefing on The Habitat by its founder Harry Cockrell.
Nestled on top of the hill, The Habitat provides the most authentic, diverse and educational Malaysian rainforest experience.
The backbone of The Habitat is the 1.6km long nature trail that meanders below three of the hill’s most historically and culturally significant buildings, namely Bel Retiro, Convalescent and Fern Hill.
There is also a virgin jungle reserve called the Government Hill Permanent Forest Reserve, a protected area since 1911, which is believed to be 130 million years old.
Their Majesties also spent their time at the Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk and Langur Way or Canopy Walk.
After the visit, Their Majesties attended a tea reception at Bel Retiro.
