Johor assembly dissolution not in the cards to avoid constitutional crisis

JOHOR BARU: Johor Umno abided by the instructions of state ruler, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar that the state assembly shall not be dissolved to avoid a state constitutional crisis.

Johor Umno liaison chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad revealed that the ruler said this during a meeting with him this morning.

“I accept the sultan’s call that an assembly dissolution at this time would lead to speculations that there maybe a constitutional crisis,” said the Benut assemblyman.

“Avoiding a state assembly dissolution would also prove that the state constitution is a complete law,” he added.

Hasni who is also the state opposition leader had on Wednesday called upon Sultan Ibrahim to dissolve the Johor state assembly that will enable a state election.

The Umno leader also said that the ruler called upon Umno leaders to have an in depth understanding of the 1895 state constitution.

“His royal highness does not want the people to be confused especially when there are parties who interprets that the Federal Constitution can replace the state constitution.”

In the ongoing Menteri Besar crisis, Datuk Osman Sapian tendered his resignation to the ruler today.

A new Menteri Besar is expected to be sworn in tomorrow.

It is widely speculated that Bukit Kepong assemblyman Dr Sahruddin Jamal would be up for the position.
