Dr Mahathir: MB appointment Bersatu’s pick

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad dismissed the possibility of the Johor sultan choosing the new Menteri Besar since that is within the preview of the government of the day.

“This is (a) political thing. The sultan has got no role. It is for the party which won the election to determine who it (the next menteri besar) is,” Dr Mahathir who is also Bersatu chairman told reporters this morning.

He said this in response to Johor crown prince, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim who took to Twitter claiming that the prerogative of appointing a new menteri besar is in the hands of the sultan.

“The decree to change the menteri besar was made long ago, but there are other people trying to claim credit and mileage, supposedly that it was they who instructed it.

“His Majesty looked into changing the menteri besar for many months. Do not forget that the power to choose the menteri besar is the absolute right of the sultan. Enough of politicking,” he said.

Osman Sapian who was Johor Menteri Besar quit his position following ongoing tension between him and the palace.

Johor exco member Sahrudin Jamal who is also a Bersatu state assemblyman is a front runner for the top post in the state but Dr Mahathir declined to confirm on that matter.
