Osman Sapian quits following rumours

PUCHONG: Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian has tendered his resignation as Johor Menteri Besar, confirmed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Yesterday, he sent two resignation letters, one to me and one to the Johor sultan,” the prime minister told reporters today

Meanwhile, Johor crown prince, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today confirmed rumours that the state’s Menteri Besar Osman Sapian would be replaced. He added that the change would be done on the terms of the Sultan.

“But somebody else is taking the credit and mileage, claiming that he ordered it,” he said on Twitter.

“His Majesty (Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar) has reviewed to change the Mentri Besar since months ago,” Tunku Ismail said today.

Tunku Ismail said that the power in appointing the Mentri Besar was the absolute right of the Sultan.

“Enough with the politicking,” he added

He also stressed the point that the replacement would not be a ‘yes man to Putrajaya’.

“I hope the new Mentri Besar is not a ‘yes man’ of Putrajaya. The welfare of the people and well being of the state must always be a priority.”

Menteri Besar Osman Sapian was in Indonesia during the recent gas leak incident in Sungai Kim-kim which sparked off a tiff between Osman and the royal family.

He was also absent during the Malaysia – Singapore negotiation talks.

Osman is the shortest serving Menteri Besar for Johor.

In a related development, three names have been making rounds as possible replacement for the top post.

The three are state excos Bukit Kepong state assemblyman Dr Sahruddin Jamal of Bersatu, Semerah state assemblyman Khuzzan Abu Bakar of PKR and Puteri Wangsa state rep Mazlan Bujang of Bersatu.
