Dr M: Fight for national spirit, not money and power
SHAH ALAM: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) members were reminded that their struggles should not be about power and money if they wished to continue to remain in the government.
Bersatu chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, speaking at the party’s third anniversary celebration yesterday, said that the party gained its support through a transparent struggle based on its national spirit rather than ‘throwing’ money as its party’s political rivals had previously done.
“In the 14th General Election (GE14), they (the political opponents) promised to raise wages, raise money for the people because they believed the people would support them, but that was totally rejected by the people.
“We will not spend money. We depend on the nationalist spirit and our race to win the support of the people. Not in the way we spend money on them.
“If we embrace money politics like the party we defeated (in GE14), we will lose too,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony were Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Home Minister, deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who is also Kedah Menteri Besar, other party leaders and about 2,000 members.
PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali who is also Economic Affairs Minister, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari and several Pakatan Harapan component party leaders, were also present.
Mahathir warned that the party’s victory in the last general election was not borne out of their own strength but out of the weakness of their opponents.
He also expressed hope that party members would constantly remind each other to remain committed to the party’s struggle for the next 100 years.
