Bersatu, Amanah still incapable of replacing Umno, PAS

PUTRAJAYA: Both Bersatu and Amanah are still incapable in replacing Umno and PAS to champion Malay rights and Islam, said political analyst Awang Azman Awang Pawi.

The deputy director of Malay Studies Academy in Universiti Malaya said both the Pakatan component parties are in for a hard time if Umno and PAS cemented their cooperation.

“Bersatu should take over the role of Umno and Amanah, PAS’ role for progressive Muslims but they haven’t been successful thus far,” he said.

“As a researcher I can see the absence of this dynamics.  If GE15 takes place next year, I think both Amanah and Bersatu will be facing major problems,” said the scholar at a forum entitled “The Malay Muslim Narrative post GE14” held at Deputy Prime Minister. Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s official residence in Seri Satria last night.

Zooming on Amanah , he said the PAS splinter party needs to have progressive Muslim dynmics in terms of policy and implementation.

“In the context of Malays and Islam, why are the people trusting PAS more than Amanah?  It is Amanah that should be more prominent if you gauge party membership and grass root support of the Malay Muslims.

“Should Amanah be changed into a progressive Muslim party or is it because the current discourse much favoured by our society that caused Amanah to be left behind?

“Or is it because Amanah leaders are so caught up with their positions as ministers, deputy ministers, special officers and so forth to the extent that the grassroot members are left in the lurch?

Amanah currently has five ministers and deputy ministers each.
