Singapore pushes AI, STEM and holistic student development in New Asean Education Roadmap
SINGAPORE, July 22 — Artificial intelligence (AI), STEM education and holistic student development will anchor Asean’s next five‑year education strategy, under a regional work plan launched on July 22 by Education Minister Desmond Lee and his counterparts from across Southeast Asia.
The Straits Times reported that the Asean Work Plan on Education 2026–2030 sets out six long‑term goals: equitable access to learning at all life stages, future‑relevant skills, stronger student well‑being and foundational learning, better governance and accountability, deeper regional cooperation, and a shared Asean identity.
Speaking at the 14th Asean Education Ministers’ Meeting at the Shangri‑La Hotel, Lee said the plan reflects a collective commitment to keep education systems responsive to global shifts — from technological disruption to geopolitical change — while ensuring students receive quality, inclusive support.
Singapore is serving as Asean Education Chair from 2026 to 2027, and also hosted the 8th Asean Plus Three and 8th East Asia Summit Education Ministers’ Meetings from July 22 to 23. Delegates will visit local schools and institutes of higher learning, with Lee holding bilateral discussions with regional counterparts.
Three priorities for a changing region
Lee outlined three areas Asean must urgently strengthen:
AI readiness — updating curricula, teaching methods and assessments to prepare students for the technology’s rapid impact.
STEM capability — equipping the region’s workforce to adapt to economic transformation and technological disruption.
Holistic development — nurturing character, empathy and sound judgement as AI becomes more embedded in daily life.
“We cannot wait for AI’s impact to fully unfold before we adapt our curricula, pedagogy, and assessment approaches,” he said.
Regional camps, educator networks to be led by Singapore
Singapore will roll out several regional programmes under the work plan, including:
Asean Plus Three STEM Camp for Youth (May 2027) — bringing together students from Asean, China, Japan and South Korea to collaborate on real‑world STEM challenges.
Asean Student Adventure Camp (November 2027) — focusing on resilience, teamwork and adaptability.
The Singapore Centre for Character and Citizenship Education will also lead a new educator network to strengthen values‑based and holistic education across Asean, creating a regional platform for ministries to share practices.
Preparing Asean for the future
Lee said the work plan represents practical steps to build a future‑ready region and deepen ties among member states.
“Together, let us invest in our people, nurture our shared values, and keep learning from one another, so that Asean remains resilient, cohesive and forward‑looking for generations to come,” he said.
