Yeo: Govt mulling to impose TNB with higher fine for overbilling users

BANGI: The government is considering to slap Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) with heftier fine for overbilling thousands of consumers earlier in May.
Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said her ministry is in the midst of consulting the Attorney-General’s Chamber’s (AGC) on the matter for now.
“We are discussing the matter with the AGC on the amount. Of course, we want higher fines,” she said, adding that the government is committed to protect consumer interest.
In May, thousands vent out their frustration against TNB for imposing higher tariff on their electricity bill.
TNB chief executive officer Amir Hamzah Azizan later admitted that there was glitch in the billing system after Yeo intervened on the matter.
Amir said that the glitch was caused by a five-day downtime in which the company was unable to carry out any billing process.
Subsequently, it triggered a massive overcharge for some homes and businesses after the system powered back on again.
