With three new train sets for Kelana Jaya LRT line, commuters can now expect a train every 3.8 minutes
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — New three train sets have begun operating on the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line today.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke who was inspecting the additional vehicles in operation here said this would restore train arrival time to three minutes per interval compared to the current irregularities.
“Currently, the frequency is 3.8 minutes, which is just under four minutes.
“Hence, Rapid Rail aims to reach a train frequency of every three minutes by the end of next month,” Loke told reporters at the Pasar Seni LRT station here.
He also said that the current capacity exceeds 125 per cent during peak hours due to the rush of passengers.
“So, we hope to achieve this goal in the near future, considering the increasing trend in passenger numbers, which now reach 250,000 per day. We are targeting 300,000 passengers next year,” he said.
With the addition of the three new train sets and also the implementation of Rapid Rail maintenance initiatives on critical components, Loke said the Kelana Jaya Line LRT is now operating with an average of 44 trains at peak times, compared to 38 trains before.
He said the three trains are part of the procurement of 27 new trains for the Kelana Jaya LRT line under the Kuala Lumpur Additional Vehicle 27 project worth RM1.72 billion.
Loke said that the first batch of trains under the Kuala Lumpur Additional Vehicle (KLAV) 27 project was received in stages starting from September 2020.
“A total of 11 trains have been received so far. The service frequency of the route has now been improved to less than 4 minutes during peak hours.
“The remaining 16 train sets will be received in stages from this month until the end of next year,” he said.
