Welson still a sure bet at Philippines Sea Games

KUALA LUMPUR: National swimmer Welson Sim is expected to retain three gold medals at the 2019 Philippines SEA Games which will be held from Nov 30 to Dec 11.

National swimming head coach Christ Martin said the 22-year-old athlete who is now undergoing training in Melbourne, Australia, will join the swimming squad in Clark.

“He is going straight to Philippines to meet us because his coach wants him to stay back all the way so he will meet us over there (Philippines),” he told a 2019 SEA Games Team Malaysia media conference today.

Meanwhile, swimming team manager, Liee Yien Yee confirmed another national swimmer Tern Jian Han would not be in action at the biennial championships after sustaining an injury and he will be replaced by young national swimmer Steve Khiew Hoe Yean.

”He will be replaced by Steve Khiew. The young swimmer is very diligent and committed in training for SEA Games and this is the time for him to get exposure,” he said.

A total of 15 athletes will be competing in 36 swimming events starting on December 4.

Malaysia is targeting three gold medals in this edition and is confident of achieving it based on KL2017’s success as aquatics contributed 20 gold medals for the national contingent including five in swimming then.
