Wan Azizah: I’m not resigning

KUALA LUMPUR: I will not relinquish my post as deputy prime minister until Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is appointed as prime minister, said Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today.

“I don’t think this issue will arise as it has been agreed that prime minister is Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad), and I am the deputy.

“When Anwar took over as (PKR) party president, there was no dispute. I did say when Anwar becomes prime minister, I will step down. So, there are no issues,” said Wan Azizah at a press conference.

Recently, Selangor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia treasurer Mohd Shaid Rosli had urged Wan Azizah to step down as deputy prime minister if PKR wanted the power transfer between Mahathir and Anwar to happen soon.

Pro-Anwar NGO, Otai Reformasi had also called upon Mahathir to reveal the exact date he would step down to clear any confusion on the power transfer agreement.

Dismissing Shaid’s comments, Wan Azizah said she would stick to the agreement made by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government which saw Mahathir becoming premier and she becoming his deputy.

She also stressed that the power transfer between Mahathir and Anwar would happen but did not elaborate on the timeline.

Upon winning the general election last year, Mahathir had announced that he would only be an interim prime minister, possibly staying for two years, before stepping down for Anwar.
