Unifi’s data breach didn’t impact customers’ financial info, data protection steps taken
KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — A data breach involving internet service Unifi’s customers’ personal details did not affect any financial information and the breach has already been contained, the service’s provider Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) said today.
In a brief statement, the telecommunications company said it “confirmed recently of a data breach involving historical Unifi customers’ personal information that includes name, national identification/passport number, and contact details. No financial information was impacted”.
Apart from confirming that the data breach has been contained, TM said it had taken proactive steps to protect the data across its platforms.
TM said it has sent out “notifications to customers informing them of the data breach and to be wary of phishing tactics including online scams, suspicious links and unsolicited phone calls”.
TM also said it has reported this matter to the relevant authorities, namely the National Cyber Coordination & Command Centre (NC4), the Department of Privacy and Data Protection (JPDP); and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
“TM assures all its customers that its Unifi services remain fully operational with no impact to its users,” it said in the statement.
Earlier today, technology news portal SoyaCincau reported on the data breach, based on one of its readers having received a text message from Unifi on the matter.
In December, TM already announced it suffered a data breach affecting 250,248 Unifi Mobile customers after a database claimed to have 2.7 million entries garnered from the Unifi website along with admin access to the Unifi website backend.
