Umno-PAS: Form RCI to investigate Adib’s death

PUCHONG: Opposition politicians today called upon the government to sack Attorney General Tommy Thomas for ‘blatant interference’ in the inquest into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also called upon the government to establish a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate the circumstances which led to Adib’s death.

“There were too many instances where the government was seen to openly interfere in the inquest proceedings. The AG has himself has refuted the findings of the police.

“The courts have yet to determine the cause of death but deputy public prosecutor Hamdan Hamzah filed an affidavit stating that Adib’s death was not caused by being beaten by any party.

“The government seems to have already decided (the cause of death),” said Ismail.

Also present at the press conference was PAS secretary general Takiyuddin Hassan.

Recently, Tommy removed Syazlin Mansor, the lawyer representing the Housing and Local Government Ministry, Fire and Rescue Department and Adib’s family due to conflict of interest as she was representing both the government and the deceased’s family.

Syazlin is also the wife of Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin’s press secretary, Ahmad Soffian Mohd Shariff.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad defended Tommy, saying the latter does things for a reason.

However, Ismail said Tommy’s reasoning did not make any sense.

“The AG said that Syazlin is the wife of one of the press secretaries of the minister. She is a professional in her own right. It does not matter if she is the husband or wife to an officer of the minister,” he said.

He added that the opposition did not intend to politicise Adib’s death but was merely looking out for a civil servant who was killed in the line of duty.

“This is about justice for Adib. If we wanted to politicise the matter, there would have been street protests,” he said.

On who should be on board the proposed RCI, Ismail said, “We will not propose who should be in it as that would be determined by the Cabinet.”

On related matter, Takiyuddin said the opposition was concerned about delivering justice to Adib’s family and it has nothing to do with race.

“His name could have been Adib, Maniam or Ah Seng. There is no politics here,” he said.

Takiyuddin also accused Tommy of acting beyond his powers, judging from the way the inquest was held.

“Tommy must not run the AGC as if it is his own law firm. The inquest itself is unnecessary as the Selangor deputy police chief Datuk Ab Rashid Ab Wahab had already said that Adib’s case was a murder.

“The inquest is an open inquiry to determine the cause of death and not to find the person responsible.

“The AG is supposed to assist the court but he already has a conclusion that Adib was not beaten (to death) with the issuance of the affidavit from DPP Hamdan,” said Takiyuddin.
