Dr M is now Acting Education Minister
PUCHONG: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would serve as the Acting Education Minister until a proper replacement is found.
In a statement today, The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that the Cabinet made the decision during its weekly meeting on Wed.
“The decision would take effect on Jan 3 and Mahathir will assume the position until a new education minister is appointed,” the statement reads.
On Jan 2, Maszlee Malik announced his resignation as Education Minister following an advice from Mahathir.
During his parting speech, Maszlee blamed the media for putting him in bad light despite coming up with several initiatives to improve the nation’s education system.
When asked by the press, Mahathir confirmed that he had asked Maszlee to resign but was mum on the reason.
This will be Mahathir’s second stint in the Education Minstry as he served in the capacity between 1974 till 1977, during the premiership of Tun Abdul Razak and Tun Hussein Onn.
