Tok Mat: No hidden agenda in Umno – PAS unity rally

KUANTAN: There is no hidden agenda behind the rally of unity between Umno and PAS in Kuantan, says Umno’s acting president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, better known as Tok Mat.

Mohamad said he did not want the gathering to be misunderstood as it was meant to unite two of the largest Malay parties determined to see peace in Malaysia.

“We just want to unite Malaysians, starting with the Malays who are Muslims so we do not lose out in our own land.

“When the majority are united, the country will be peaceful and thus the rest will also get to enjoy the peace. When the nation’s political situation is stable, then the investors will come,” said Mohamad after the Himpunan Perpaduan Ummah Pahang here, last night.

The rally saw thousands of supporters gathered at the MPK1 field in front of the Sultan Ahmad Shah State Mosque.

Also present were PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Pahang PAS commissioner Rosli Abdul Jabar.

When asked whether PAS and Umno would jointly rule as unity governments in the states held by the parties, Mohamad said they were not talking about this yet.

“It’s about the party first. The election is still far away. We are now going on roadshows to explain our agenda so the people do not misunderstand our unity as something dangerous to non-Muslims.

“We have no intention to sideline or discriminate anyone,” said Mohamad, who is carrying out the duties of Umno president.

Abdul Hadi said this was proven with the two parties being supported by other races and non-Muslims as well.

“Umno has MCA and MIC while we have the PAS Supporters Congress. It has been proven with Umno ruling for decades and PAS governing Kelantan. We act more than we talk,” said Abdul Hadi.
