Toddler dies after being left in car

KOTA KINABALU: A toddler died after being left in her mother’s car in Lahad Datu, on Wednesday.

Lahad Datu police chief Asst Comm Nasri Mansor said prior to the incident, the two-year-old had followed her mother, a 31-year-old housewife, to fetch her sisters from school at about 1pm.

“After fetching her sisters, they went home and the mother told her eldest child, 10, to bring the toddler into the house,” he said, in a statement.

Without checking, she went to the second floor of the house to perform her prayers and had fallen asleep.

When the mother woke up at about 3.45pm, she and husband called out for toddler but did not receive any response. They looked for her in the house but did not find her.

The mother went out of the house and asked her neighbours if they had seen the girl but to no avail.

“She then went to have a look in her car and saw that the toddler was unconscious, with foam in her mouth,” he said.

Nasri said the parents immediately took the girl to the Lahad Datu hospital where she was pronounced dead.

There were also burn marks on the toddler’s left cheek and arm.

The case is being investigated under section 304A of the Penal Code for causing death.
