Three graft charges for Bung Mokhtar over RM2.8 million

KUALA LUMPUR: Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar of Umno was charged with three graft charges over funds amounting to RM2.8 million at the Sessions Court this morning.

The amount was received in his capacity as Felcra’s non executive chairman in June 2015.

All three charges were under section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission Act. The section criminalises acceptance and delivery of gratification through an agent.

If convicted he faces a maximum of 20 years imprisonment.

In the first charge, Bung allegedly received RM2.2 million from Madhi Abdul Hamid, a Public Mutual Fund investment agent as payment to obtain the approval from the then second finance minister for Felcra to invest RM150 million in the mutual fund. The offence was allegedly committed on June 12, 2015.

Bung also is accused of receiving graft totalling RM262,000 via a bank account registered under his actress wife Zizie Izette A Samad from the same agent.

This was meant to secure approval from the then second finance minister for Felcra to invest RM150 million in the mutual fund.

In the third charge sheet, he was accused of receiving graft totalling RM337,500 on June 15, 2015 via a fund account registered under his wife from Norhaili Ahmad Mokhtar, an investment agent of Public Mutual Berhad.

Session Court judge Rozina Ayob allowed him to be bailed with RM100,000 and one surety. In addition to that Bung also had to surrender his passport to the court. The case was fixed for mention on June 10.

Zizie Izette meanwhile was charged in another court.
