Teen suicide: Victim may have suffered from depression

PUCHONG: The mother of the Sarawakian teen who committed suicide early this week in Kuching told the police that the victim did not show any signs of behavioural changes prior the incident.

Padawan district police deputy chief, DSP Mervin Lisa said based on the investigation, the 16-year old, known as Davia Emelia, was suspected of suffering from depression.

“According to her mother, the victim was close to her stepfather but after he married a Vietnamese woman, he rarely returned to Kuching to meet the victim. It caused the victim to feel sad,” he said.

Mervin said the investigation of the case was still ongoing and thus far, the police had obtained statements from the school and the victim’s close friends.

Early this week, Davia committed suicide by jumping from the top of a shophouse after putting up a poll on her Instagram account on whether she should kill herself or otherwise.

She had put up the poll with the question, “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L”, hours before committing suicide.

About 69% of the respondents chose death for her on the Instagram account.

The government had since announced that it may amend the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 to better tackle cyber-bullying and online suicide attempts after the incident.
