Sultan Ahmad Shah: The Ruler who is quick to help

KUANTAN: Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar’s speed and response in reaching out and helping his subjects, will be among the memories that Pahang elected representatives would remember of the former Ruler’s personal attributes.

Pahang DAP secretary Lee Chin Chen said that one of the most unforgettable episodes he had with Sultan Ahmad Shah was the bus crash tragedy that cost 37 lives in Genting Highlands in August 2013.

“I was told that upon receiving the news, he immediately departed from Kuantan to meet the victims and their families at the site. He then ordered that all the forms of assistance for the victims be expedited.

“I knew then that I could learn a thing or two from the concern and compassion he displayed,” said Lee, who was then the Ketari assemblyman.

Sultan Ahmad Shah, 88, died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur at 8.50 am yesterday. His remains will be buried at the Royal Mausoleum in Pekan, after the Zohor prayers today.

Meanwhile, Pahang Tourism, Environment and Plantations and Biotechnology committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin, said Sultan Ahmad Shah was a testament to his slogan – ‘Nothing Separates the Ruler and his People’ or ‘Raja dan Rakyat Berpisah Tiada’, because of his generosity and time spent in helping the people.

“There was once a fire at the Datuk Bahaman secondary school in Lanchang. The Ruler left for the scene immediately and spent about four hours at the school to speak and calm the students.

“He was reluctant to leave the school as the appropriate assistance had not been given to the students yet. It is one of the episodes that I remember of him that has been etched in my memory,” said Mohd Sharkar.

Pulau Tioman assemblyman and State Human Resources, Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations cchairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain, said Sultan Ahmad Shah’s death during the holy month of Ramadan was indeed a blessing.

For Beserah assemblyman Andansura Rabu, the former Ruler’s death was a huge loss as he had a personality that brought him closer to his subjects.

He added that when Beserah was hit by a flood in 2013, the Sultan was among the first to arrive in the area and speak to those who were affected.
