Student’s murder: Parents must play their role in bringing up kids

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the murder of a teenager at the hands of his sister and her boyfriend in Perak, Hannah Yeoh stressed the need of parents’ role in bringing up their children.

“Generally, these things happen when there is a communication breakdown, where family members don’t talk to one another and no one is monitoring the children.

“The children are not educated and are left to grow up in this way,” said the Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister at the Parliament today.

On Friday, the police detained a teenage couple after they admitted to murdering the Form Four student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan King Edward VII.

It was suspected that a fight happened between the victim and his sister’s boyfriend when the latter came to the girl’s house to collect his handphone.

The girl and her boyfriend were alleged to have slashed the victim’s throat and wrist with a knife, before suffocating him with a piece of plastic.

Yeoh, who is also Segambut MP, said those involved in the crime should be subjected to rehabilitation in order to facilitate recovery process.

“If it involves children committing crimes against other children, they are still young and have a long future ahead of them.

“It’s not enough just to catch those who carry out these wrongdoings. We have to study and see what happened in their families,” she said.
