Students excited to return home

NILAI: After nearly two months stranded on campus following the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO),  the long-awaited moment finally arrived for a group of 11 medical students from the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) this morning.

The students, who are returning to their hometowns in Kedah and Penang to meet and celebrate Ramadan with their families, arrived at the Kuala Kedah District Police headquarters (IPD) at 5.20 am after travelling for six hours from USIM campus in Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur.

Nurul Ilham Huda Redzuan, 19, said she missed her mother’s cooking very much especially the ‘lemak rebung’ dish (bamboo shoots in spicy coconut gravy) during the breaking of fast.

“I was very happy to see my father waiting for me at the IPD to bring me back home. I am thankful to the government and all parties who worked hard to ensure we reach home safely,” she said in a statement issued by USIM Strategic Communication Centre here today.

Sharing a similar sentiment, Sharifah Nahidhah Syed Ibrahim, 22, who was very excited and happy to arrive at her hometown, said she feels sad that few of her friends are still waiting for their turn to return home.

For Mohamad Akmal Arif Zainol, 22, the experience of returning to his hometown in Kubor Panjang, Pendang, this time was very different, and will be remembered forever.

Meanwhile, USIM Students’ Representative Council (MPP) urged the students to wait patiently for their turn to return to their respective hometowns and be aware of any announcements made by the university and government from time to time.

“This group is expected to return this Thursday to the southern states such as Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor,” the statement said.
