SRC Charges: Najib ordered to enter defense

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today ordered former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to enter his defense on seven charges of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

The ruling was made by Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.

The judge arrived at the decision after finding that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Najib, 66, on three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), three counts of money laundering and one count of abuse of power in relation to the funds.

The Pekan MP is accused of committing the offences between Aug 17, 2011 and March 2, 2015.

Najib, who served as the sixth prime minister from 2009 to 2018, is the first head of government of Malaysia to find himself in the dock.

Commenting on the ruling, Najib in a Facebook post, said he will present his own statement in the defense proceeding.

“The defense, for the first time, will be allowed to call our own witnesses in the proceeding to prove my innocence.

“Insyaallah, this is the opportunity for me to clear my name,” he said.
