Spike in face mask, disinfectant frauds in KK

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 24 fraud cases involving face mask and disinfectant sales with estimated losses of RM147,329 has been reported in the district since the outbreak of the COVID-19 to today.

Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said all the cases involved complainants been duped by offers made on social media.

“After the victims made their online payments to the ‘seller’, the goods did not arrive and the seller was unreachable, they then realised they had deceived and lodged their reports,” he said in a statement today.

He said all the cases were being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud.

In this regard, Habibi advised the public to be cautious so as not to be hoodwinked by advertisements and offers for face mask and disinfectant on social media and online shopping websites.
