Sivasangari wins Australian Open

National squash player S Sivasangari secured her 11th Professional Squash Association (PSA) title after winning the 2019 Australian Open women’s singles title.
The 20-year-old defeated Satomi Watanabe of Japan 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 in 39 minutes at the Bega Country Club, Australia, today.
The PSA Women’s Young Player of the Year advanced to the finals after edging Australia’s Christine Nunn 11-6, 9-11, 11-4, 11-9, while Satomi ousted Malaysian Rachel Arnold 11-6, 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 11-3 in the semifinals, yesterday.
Siva is the third Malaysian to win the Australian Open title since the tournament’s inception in 1979, after former world number one Nicol David’s success in 2011 and 2012 and Low Wee Wern last year.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles final, Mohd Syafiq lost to Frenchman Victor Crouin, 8-11, 5-11, 4-11 in 32 minutes.
Mohd Syafiq beat Japan’s Tomotaka Endo,11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, while Crouin defeated Malaysian Addeen Idrakie, 11-4, 11-6, 6-11, 11-7 to set up the final meet.
The only Malaysian to have won the men’s singles title in the land down under is Ng Eain Yow, in 2017.
