Singapore PM heads to KL for Asean and RCEP Summits, regional trade in focus

SINGAPORE, Oct 25 — Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will attend the three-day 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur from Sunday, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Wong, who is also Finance Minister, will be accompanied by his wife Loo Tze Lui and Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

“The Asean leaders will reaffirm their commitment to Asean’s community-building efforts and discuss ways to promote an open, inclusive, and stable regional architecture.

“They will also discuss strengthening Asean’s economic integration by enhancing intra-Asean trade and tapping into emerging areas in the digital and green economies,” the PMO said in a statement.

 PMO said Malaysia’s chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability” encapsulates the region’s efforts to build a forward-looking, cohesive, and resilient Asean amid geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges.

At the summit, Wong will meet with leaders from key partners including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Nations, and the United States.He will also participate in the 5th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, which aims to reaffirm RCEP’s role in strengthening regional trade and economic integration amidst global challenges.

The PMO said that during Wong’s absence, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will be the Acting Prime Minister.
