Sim: Coaches want more say

KUALA LUMPUR: Sports coaches want the government to distribute power and resources at the federal level to stakeholders at the lower level to further enhance sports development in the country, said Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.

He said the they do not want matters relating to management of sports to be centralised at the federal level .

“This is to allow the stakeholders at the lower level to develop their sport,” he told reporters after a dialogue with about 80 coaches from various sports here today.

Sim said the coaches also wanted the government to look into their welfare, including to provide scholarships for those wishing to further their studies.

“In brief, they want the government to provide a better career package in terms of social security, health care, education opportunities, salary increment and others.

“There are also those who want the ministry to provide various facilities similar to those given to athletes,” he added.

He said today’s dialogue session provided an opportunity for the ministry to know and understand problems facing stakeholders in the country’s sports arena.

“We take note of their problems and understand the challenges facing them. We want to create a working environment that is more comfortable and lucrative so that they will be more focused in training our national athletes,” he added.
