Selangor MB: I gave speaker mandate to determine the motions

SHAH ALAM: Contrary to the claim by Selangor Speaker Ng Suee Lim that he was powerless in determining government motions that would be debated, Selangor Menteri Besar Amiruddin Shari said that he gave the state legislative head a mandate to determine to decide whether or not to greenlight the tabling of a proposed amendment which would have allowed the unilateral conversion of minors to Islam.

“It was part of the discussion, whether we wanted to table (the amendment) or not.

“Finally, I gave the mandate to the speaker to make a decision because the approval to bring the (order) paper to the state assembly is at the discretion of the speaker,” Amirudin told reporters after a closed-door dinner in Shah Alam with Selangor PKR members and Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali.

When asked about his attempts to gain support for the motion from Pakatan Harapan (PH) assemblymen which was met with protest on 26 July, he said there was an attempt to table the amendment towards the end of the state legislative assembly sitting.

“We tried to bring it to the end of the sitting but unfortunately something happened during the sitting and there were a few motions that did not get to be tabled,” he claimed.

He clarified that there was no concensus reached for the proposed amendments and as such, the speaker’s move to end the sitting proved that the latter acted with ‘wisdom’.

The state DAP chapter which is part of the PH government have declared that they are against any attempts that permit unilateral conversion of minors.
