Ronnie Liu to Azmin: You don’t stand a chance against Anwar

PUCHONG: DAP’s Sungai Pelek state assemblyperson Ronnie Liu said PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali does not stand chance of becoming the next prime minister.

In a statement, Liu said Azmin should realise by now that PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has the majority support from PKR, Amanah and DAP to become the next prime minister.

He reminded Azmin that Pakatan Harapan leadership has agreed that Anwar would succeed from Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the latter steps down in two years-time.

“Anwar might not be Mahathir’s favourite but he is the choice of PKR (the majority faction within that party), DAP and Amanah.

“Even if some Bersatu and PKR members were to rally behind Azmin, they would still not be the majority within Pakatan.

“So, I don’t think Azmin has any chance of becoming prime minister. He should realise this,” said Liu.

It was speculated that Mahathir was not in favour of Anwar to succeed him. Instead, the nonagenarian is said to be promoting Azmin to become the next prime minister.

On how Azmin can become prime minister, Liu said it was possible for Bersatu to grow quickly if there were massive crossovers from Umno and PAS and they could theoretically back Azmin.

However, the DAP leader said it was unlikely to happen.

Liu also urged Mahathir to provide details on the timeline on when he would hand over the baton to Anwar.

“Mahathir should accept and assure everyone that he is going to stick to the agreed plan.

“It’s not enough for him to keep saying he will do so. He needs to give a precise timeline.

“Once a fixed timeline is announced, and everything becomes concrete, we will see the end of PKR’s infighting,” he said.
