Ramkarpal: Lack of empathy led to 16-year old’s death

PUCHONG: Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh today said he was appalled by the lack of empathy shown by social media users which led to the death of a 16-year old girl in Sarawak.

On May 13, the victim took her own life by jumping from the top of a shophouse after putting up a poll on her Instagram account on whether she should kill herself or otherwise.

Sarawak police said that the girl had put up the poll with the question, “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L”, hours before committing suicide.

About 69% of the respondents chose death for her on the Instagram account.

Ramkarpal said that he was disturbed that social media users have encouraged the girl the kill herself instead of attempting to help her.

“How some netizens could have actually condoned this is beyond me. Would the girl still be alive today if the majority on her Instagram account had discouraged her from taking her own life?

“Would she have heeded the advice of social media netizens to seek professional help had they done so?” asked the DAP MP.

Ramkarpal then urged the Communications and Multimedia Ministry to investigate the victim’s social media accounts to uncover the circumstances that led to her death.

He cited a case in the US where two years ago, a woman was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide.

“Since attempting suicide is an offence in this country, then abetting one to attempt suicide may be too,” said Ramkarpal.
