Quartararo is Rookie of the Year

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team (SRT) rider, Fabio Quartararo clinches the 2019 MotoGP Rookie of the Year title following his second-place finisher at the Japanese Grand Prix (GP), today.

So far, it was six podium finishes for Quartararo this season and his first back to back second-place victory after the French rookie claimed the top two spots at the Thailand GP in Buriram, early this month.

The 20-year-old rider now scored a massive 163 points to conclude the Rookie of the Year standing, 97 points ahead of Spaniard Joan Mir of Suzuki Ecstar.

At the Twin Ring Motegi circuit today, Quartararo finished 0.870 seconds (s) behind newly-crowned 2019 world champion, Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda Team who set 42 minutes and 41.492s, while Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso of Italy came in third (42:42.817s).

Quartararo’s teammate, Franco Morbidelli of Italy settled in sixth place with a time of 42:50.679s despite started the race in the second grid.

“In testing sessions, we set a goal of between 50 and 90 points and to be Rookie of the Year. I am delighted to have been able to do so much more than that for the team.

“To Petronas Sepang Racing Team who believe in me, Yamaha, I want to thank all these people who believe in me. For sure I will give my maximum to ensure they keep believing in me, and honestly, I think we did an amazing job. We will try to finish this season in a really good way,” said Quartararo through an audio clip provided by his team, today.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s first MotoGP rider, Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah of Red Bull KTM Tech 3 finished the race in 19th place.
