PSM: Govt must address climate crisis, current policies ridiculous

PUCHONG: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) today launched the Climate Crisis Campaign in its attempt to compel the government to adopt measures to tackle climate crisis in the country.

Its central committee member Sharan Raj said PSM’s 2019 National Congress has passed a motion in response to the climate crisis in Malaysia.

“We want the government to declare a climate emergency in the country as Malaysia’s current attitude is preventing necessary measures from being taken to tackle climate crisis.

“The Climate Crisis Campaign will be launched in several phases nationwide,” he said, after launching phase one of the campaign here today.

He said the campaign is needed as deforestation is happening at an alarming rate and the government is failing to reduce its greenhouse gas emission.

“Our path to economic progress is also unsustainable, with contradicting policies which demand exploitation of natural resources and calling for nature’s preservation at the same time,” said Sharan Raj.

Commenting further on the campaign, he said PSM will hold roadshows, forums and roundtable meetings with communities in Seberang Prai, Ipoh and Pasir Gudang.

“Phase Two will commence in Pahang, Selangor, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and Perlis,” said Sharan Raj.
