Polling closes as vote counting begins
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Voting has officially ended for the state elections in Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Selangor, and Terengganu held today, which have continued the fierce political contest in Malaysia tracing back to last year’s 15th general election.
The results will show if Malaysians have accepted the new alliance between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), which set aside their former rivalry to form a unity government after the general election resulted in a hung Parliament.
They will also confirm if the so-called “green wave” of religious conservatism, which propelled the Perikatan Nasional to the cusp of victory in the same election, is still sweeping the country.
