Police will investigate traffic cop’s shooting case professionally

PUCHONG: The police will be professional in investigating the case involving a traffic policeman who shot a young man on Wednesday, causing the victim to be hospitalised.

Kedah police chief Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob said a professional, transparent and fair investigation was important to ensure justice is served to all parties.

“Initial investigation found that the incident occurred when two men on a Modenas motorcycle ran a red light in Taman Pelangi, Jalan Kuala Kedah, before they were given a chase by the traffic police on duty at the area.

“The motorcyclist and the pillion rider refused to stop and continued to ride recklessly, running a couple of other red lights and rubbing against the policeman’s motorcycle in their bid to escape,” he said in a statement today.

Zainuddin said the policeman fired a shot at the rear tyre of the motorcycle in a bid to stop them.

“The action was taken as the duo refused to stop and their recklessness threatened the safety of the policeman and the public.

“Only after they stopped, the policeman realised he had shot the pillion rider on his left arm,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 and 307 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The motorcycle rider, Zulhilmi Azri,22, was riding with pillion Mohd Alif Anuar,21, heading towards their workplace at Alor Mengkudu from Kuala Kedah.
