Police to investigate viral letter criticising CNY decor in Puchong school

PUCHONG: Police will investigate a viralled letter that criticised the Chinese New Year decoration in a school in Puchong, which has been taken down.

Serdang district police chief ACP Ismail Borhan said an investigation has been opened after they received two reports on the matter yesterday.

“We will call several individuals to get their statements.

“The investigation is being done under Section 505 (c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communication Act 1998,” he said.

Two days ago, SMK Pusat Bandar Puchong 1 took down its Chinese New Yearcelebration decorations, following threats from lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz.

Khairul claimed that he had received complaints from parents that the decorations were an attempt to propagate non-Islamic religions to Muslims.

Khairul, who is also the vice president of the right-wing Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), received criticism for his threats, with Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah reminding him that the Chinese New Year festival was a cultural one, not religious.

Since then, both the Education Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office have said that the government encourages multi-cultural celebrations in public areas to promote unity among Malaysians.
