Perhilitan to relocate wild elephant tonight

MERSING: The Johor Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) would start its translocation of a wild male elephant to a new habitat tonight.

Its director, Salman Saaban said the elephant was captured on Thursday at Tenggaroh Forest Reserve and would be transferred to a new habitat within the state.

“The operation to capture the elephant, which is estimated to be 30 years old, involved 30 personnel from the Johor Department of Wildlife and National Parks and Pahang’s Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre.

“Three decoy elephants, namely Abot, Pet and Kasturi were also used in the operation,” he said in a statement.

Salman noted that the elephant is part of a group of elephants in the Jemaluang area, near here, which affected crops at Felda Tenggaroh 6, Felda Tenggaroh Selatan 1 and 2, Felcra Sedeli Besar, Felda Tenggaroh Timur 2 and the surrounding areas.
