Perhilitan seizes tiger claws, fangs in integrated operation

KUALA LUMPUR: Tiger claws, fangs and elephant sperm were among the items seized in a two-day Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK) from Saturday in the effort to eradicate illegal hunting activities and protect the forest treasures.

The police operation involving the Labis Forest Reserve in Johor; Endau-Rompin National Park Reserve Areas, Johor; Gua Musang, Kelantan and the Ulu Muda Forest Reserve, Kedah with the co-operation of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsula Malaysia (Perhilitan).

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) deputy director Datuk Zainal Abidin Kasim said eight men, namely, five locals, two Indonesians and a Cambodian were detained in the operation.

He said they found several bottles of elephant sperm, tiger claws and fangs, deer skin, forest orchid species and ‘kacip fatimah’ (afterbirth care herbs) plants with the suspects.

The elephant sperm was believed to be an aphrodisiac while the tiger claws and fangs were used as invincibility amulets.

‘’The police also seized a chainsaw, four parang, an axe and 20 nylon traps used to catch wild animals,’’ he told a media conference at Bukit Aman.

The items seized were estimated to be worth RM500,000 and were believed to be for the local and foreign markets.

All the suspects, aged between 20 and 40 years, were now being remanded for seven days for investigation.
