Pasir Gudang: Students sad they couldn’t take SPM results at school
PASIR GUDANG: Students receiving their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results at the Pasir Gudang district education office here were disappointed that they could not visit their school one last time as it was shut down due to chemical pollution.
Students from 34 schools in Pasir Gudang made a beeline to the district education office here since about 10am to receive their
results.
Some were seen wearing face masks to prevent exposure to toxic fumes that have affected more than 900 people living near Sg Kim Kim.
“I was shocked when I saw my results as I was not expecting to
be one of the top scorers in my school.
“However, I am saddened that
I did not get to visit my school for the last time as it had to be shut down due to the pollution,” he said when met at the education district office.
Hadif Umair hoped those responsible for dumping the toxic waste would be charged accordingly.
Student Khoo Li Ming from SMK Seri Alam 2, who scored 8As and 2Bs, said he and his friends were disappointed when they were told they had to take their results here instead.
“We were looking forward to visiting our old classrooms and meeting our teachers today.
“I really hope that those responsible for the disaster will pay the price,” he said.
Khoo said he was not expecting to score 8As but hoped that the results would enable him to achieve his ambition of becoming an engineer.
It was learnt that 8,486 students from 34 secondary schools affected by the pollution received their SPM results yesterday.
Students can also check their status via sms or via the examination syndicate website sppat.moe.gov.my/semakanMeanwhile, Johor Education Department deputy director Azman Adnan said the number of SPM candidates who achieved Grade A in all subjects declined from 1,045 candidates in 2017 to 940 in 2018.
He said out of the 940 candidates, 16 of them achieved A+ for all subjects compared to 24 candidates in 2017.
He said 52,418 candidates sat for their SPM in 2018 compared to 55,672 candidates last year.
Azman said the SPM National Grade Point Average (NGPA) for Johor in 2018 was 4.81, similar to the NGPA in 2017.
“Johor has recorded an improvement in the SPM NGPA for seven consecutive years since 2015 and the figure is even better compared with the country’s NGPA at 4.95,”
he said in a press conference at Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar here yesterday.
Azman also said the History subject recorded the highest improvement in last year’s SPM at 0.26 points while Mathematics subject had declined at 0.18 points.
