PAS: Prove your mettle, Latheefa

PUCHONG: Amidst queries over Latheefa Koya’s appointment as the new Malaysian Anti – Corruption Commission chief from various quarters including her former party PKR, PAS has urged her to prove her mettle.

“She has to prove that she can carry out the duties of the position without fear or favour in the fight against corruption on all levels,” said PAS secretary general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement on Wednesday.

Questions over her appointment were raised, including by the Malaysian Bar, since it was done directly by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Bar said that the appointment was disturbing as the parliament committee was not involved.

The Cabinet were also in the dark. William Leong, the parliament select committee chairman on public appointment too clarified that the committee was not kept in the loop.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak leader Nancy Shukri meanwhile said it was ultimately upto the people to decide on whether the appointment augured well with them through the ballot box.

“Dr Mahathir has said it is his prerogative (to appoint Latheefa), who are we to question him? We have chosen him as our Prime Minister and we have chosen Pakatan Harapan to be our government.”

“If that is how he decides, whether the people like it or not, we leave it to them,” said the Batang Sadong MP.

Election watchdog, Bersih 2.0 meanwhile was queasy with Dr Mahathir’s absolute power in the appointment.

“While current laws allow the PM to advise the King to appoint whomever he wants, such almost absolute power in the hands of the PM does not bode well for our parliamentary democracy system of government,” it said.

“As a country, we cannot hope for and depend on the good intentions and graces of the PM, but we need strong and independent institutions and processes to hold the PM and all public officials accountable,” added the watchdog.
