PAS: Disband PSC on public appointments

PUCHONG: PAS has called upon the government to disband the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on major public appointments, following Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s unilateral decision to appoint rights lawyer Latheefa Koya as the new MACC chief recently.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who also a member of the PSC, said that Mahathir’s decision shows that the committee has no role to play.

“I suggest chairman William Leong suspend the committee immediately since Pakatan Harapan has once again showed that it could not even show respect to its own manifesto and promises,” he said, in a statement.

Recently, Mahathir announced that Latheefa would take over as the new MACC chief commissioner effective June 1, replacing Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull, who opted for an early retirement.

The announcement took a lot of quarters by surprise. Mahathir admitted that he did not even consult the Cabinet before making the decision.

Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Kubang Kerian MP, said that it was Pakatan which made the promise that major public appointments would be vetted by the committee and no political appointees would be given top civil service posts.

He added that the same manifesto promised that PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would take over as prime minister when the time comes.

“But this episode has shown us that Pakatan’s promises cannot be taken seriously.

“PAS suggests that the PSC on major public appointments to be disbanded until Pakatan can honour its own promises,” said Tuan Ibrahim.
