Parliament: Mandatory death sentence abolished

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Mohamed Hanipa Maidin, told Dewan Rakyat today the mandatory death sentence under the Penal Code and Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 will be replaced with a death sentence at the judge’s discretion.

“The decision to amend the Acts was made after a detailed study was carried out,” he said.

He said the removal of the mandatory death sentence will involve nine offences under the Penal Code and two offences under and Firearms Act.
