Parfum: Our confidence in the new CJ stems from her achievements and judgments

PUCHONG: Universiti Malaya Law Faculty Alumni Organisation (Parfum) is confident with the credibility of the newly appointed chief Judge Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.

The confidence is stemmed from Tengku Maimun’s achievements and just and intelligent judgments, said Parfum president Tan Sri Shahrizat Jalil.

“We believe Tengku Maimun is the best choice for the job. She would also raise the dignity of the judicial and legal institutions of the nation.

“Parfum is also proud of her appointment before a graduate from Universiti Malaya Law Faculty has once again been entrusted to steer the nation’s judicial system at the highest level,” Shahrizat said in a statement.

The Prime Minister’s Office yesterday confirmed Tengku Maimun’s appointment, replacing Tan Sri Richard Malanjum who retired on 12 April after reaching the mandatory retirement age.

Tengku Maimun’s appointment is historic as she is the first female chief justice in Malaysia.

Born in Kota Baru, Kelantan, Tengku Maimun also held several posts including magistrate, Sessions Court judge, federal counsel, and senior assistant registrar as well as special officer to former Chief Justices Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah and Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim.

She was the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court in 2005.

Tengku Maimun was appointed judicial commissioner in 2006 and confirmed as High Court judge the following year.

She was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2013 and subsequently appointed as Federal Court judge in November last year.

She was appointed to replace Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, who attained his constitutional retirement age of 66 in October last year and was given a six-month extension that ended in April.
