Op Chick: MACC busts illegal China frozen chicken import ring in Sabah, three nabbed
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has busted a syndicate suspected of illegally importing frozen chicken from China into Sabah by allegedly bribing authorities at a port, Sinar Harian reported.
Citing a source, the Malay daily reported that 10 containers of frozen chicken believed to have been illegally imported from China were seized under Op Chick on Tuesday morning.
The operation was carried out by the MACC’s Intelligence Division in cooperation with the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
Preliminary investigations found that the containers had allegedly been falsely declared and did not undergo the required inspection process.
Three men in their 30s to 50s, comprising forwarding agents and a company manager, were also arrested following the operation.
The MACC is reportedly identifying other individuals suspected of involvement in the case.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Sri Abd Halim Aman confirmed the operation and arrests when contacted by Sinar Harian.
He said the three suspects would be brought to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrates’ Court for a remand application to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.
